In the last days of May finally temperatures returned to normal after a very sunny and hot month. Spring rains followed by such a May caused the colors of the irises, the roses and now the broom to explode. Combined with the whites of the false locust and the elderberry it made for a very sweet bouquet. The heat was a bit heavy at times for some of the US graduate students here for two weeks (Old Dominion University of Virginia, Counseling and Guidance) but otherwise it was an ideal time to conduct their studies. This included local speakers from health professions as well as a thorough introduction to Tuscany. Professor Dr. Ted Remley realizes that international contact among professionals is fundamental in his program but just as important for many of the participants is the chance to enter another culture, another way of doing things. This capacity is essential for a good counsellor, who aims at accompanying persons through temporary moments of difficulty.
The big group in June comes from another setting, the Rudolf Steiner School of Basel, Switzerland but the objectives are similar: training, in this case sculpting and other art forms, and contact with another culture. We are so close, but crossing the Swiss-Italian border is one of the more contrasting travel experience in Europe!
In July our own youth camp, a few days planned for elderly by the Catholic Sant’Egidio group, and an Austrian church family retreat are other examples of sojourns with a purpose, including but beyond simple relaxation and entertainment.
Always to groups and, as possible, to individual guests we offer a tour of our historical property, which we hope is informative regarding Tuscan farm life. If there is interest and time, another enhancer to a stay is the 4km circle walk to visit 12th century neighbourhood church of Sant’Agata and the Bonsi farm with its 30,000 olive trees and olive oil press.
We still have plenty of rooms free in August and September, which is not unusual as persons head to the seaside, if they can. But the agreement we have with the administration of the excellent public pool in Reggello (4km) and our cool evening air at 500 metres altitude is sure to attract some guests who want to escape the heat and hectic of the cities.
