The idea of alternative tourism has been around for a while, and it now appears that its appeal is growing. Italy’s economy is suffering in many ways and for various reasons, some related to global issues and others related to specific Italian problems. As in other sectors, tourism is in difficulty with the ever increasing competition from developing areas in Europe and worldwide now more cheaply accessible. Then some see a poor cost-service relationship in Italy. At the same time, Italy has an excess of offers.
A result is that more than ever guest facilities need to clarify their purpose and their target clientele. One market reality is the evidence of the widening gap between the very wealthy and those with tight budgets. While there are always more luxury and super-luxury hotels, many persons, especially families, simply do not have the funds for vacation spending or, for that matter, to invest in workshops, training, retreats, or other forms of personal growth. One form of alternative tourism could be no-frills accommodations, perhaps eliminating what some consider unnecessary services: frequent changes of towels; daily room service; 24-hour reception; TV, phone and fridge in room, various “freebies”. Or are these essentials!?
Alternative tourism can take various forms, but it implies offering something unusual, perhaps for a niche clientele. It can mean hospitality particularly sensitive to environmental issues or to facilitating contact with local realities, such as culinary, cultural, or historical heritage. There might be an emphasis on wellness or on contact with nature.
Casa Cares certainly in our context is an economical offer, especially considering the slow food preparation of our meals, often with produce from our garden, and the spaces available (park, meeting rooms, library). Our concern for the environment is an attraction for many and we want to help our guests appreciate our local setting, both the cultural and natural aspects. Something must work because an encouraging number of visitors, including group leaders, return year after year. And it makes for enjoyable reunions!
