In just a few days in the middle of June Tuscany went from wet, cool spring to very hot summer. Florence in these days is one of the hottest cities in Italy, a situation worsened by the humidity that caps the city in its Arno Valley. Who wouldn’t like to jump in a pool?! Often persons have suggested that we invest in one, but there are reasons for not having gone that route. First and most simply, the cost. This is the initial cost but also the maintenance. Then there is the question of water use in an area where often we have had water shortages. Other questions are the short season and safety issues. And perhaps the convincing note now is the excellent public pool in Reggello. By an agreement with its administrator, our guests have discounted entrance and we have paid a fee for the entire season for our staff. This is a form of support for the local public facilities rather than retreating to private interests, a tendency in our country with consequences in civil participation and responsibility. Sounds like an apology for no pool? Perhaps, but right now the arrangement is working well.
Our children’s camp (8-12 year olds) just finished and the youth camp (13-17) has begun. The numbers and schedule have grown but these are enjoyable days for all of us. Most of the staff were once themselves participants, which equips them well for leading camps to which the majority returns year after year.
Our biggest news is the loss of Adriana Papagna, who has left us after more than four years of service as our villa governess. She has worked with a series of young volunteers to keep this old villa in order. Also missing will be her contributions in administration and in the reception of the guests. We are searching for her replacement, but it will be tough to fill her shoes. She has left this message:
To all Casa Cares friends,
A time for change has come and I wish to say to you all, ‘Good-bye’. It was a pleasure meeting and re-seeing you all throughout these years and, who knows? We may meet again!
God bless, Adriana

You should really think about getting one. Of course, risks are always there, but you can overcome that by specifying a certain height limit for the pool.
